The unify States went through a period of turbulence and bicker in the second half of the 19th century. From the via media of 1850 to the Compromise of 1877, the country had to go through a variety of hardships, atrocious problems, and messes that it had to get itself out of. They say what doesnt kill you makes you stronger, and as the U.S. made it out alive from that time period, and so one would think they would emerge stronger and more unified than ever. One would in like manner think that after the people realized the United States was a strong single earth and not mediocre a collection of states after the Gettysburg Address, the people would put that realization into effect. However, I disagree with this case. The strong divisiveness of the 1850s, the confrontation with them in the war, and the messy attempts to mend the divisions through Reconstruction led to a country that just really not that much united and stronger in the end.
