In 1995, I began my career as a correctional Officer for New River easterly Correctional Institute, a prison within the Florida Department of Corrections. The commanding officers were all Caucasian males and it was known that there was an unsaid society called “the good ‘ole boys.” Diversity was not apart of the equation; your job subsidizations and promotions depended upon whom you were related to and whom you knew.
In the prison system, a career woman was frowned upon and most of the woman who worked in the prison often suffered extreme harassment.



There were oft that I was assigned by my commanding officer to work out in the dorms amongst the inmates and the male officers would be assigned to the office. This assignment was a very dangerous assignment and often the inmates would imperil the female officers while the office assignment was far little dangerous, enclosed and not in direct contact with the inmates. The inmates were further to threaten the female officers by the male officers as an determent tactic to get the female officers to resign. In most cases that tactic worked.
In other situations the male officers as well as the commanding officers would sexually harass the female officers.
