Humans Are Not Always Selfish

In this reading, Rachels first begins by challenging the opinion that everyone always does what they involve by showing that we often do unpleasant tasks for future pleasures or from feelings of obligations. Another way Rachels explains how someone is unselfish is when someone derives delight from attainting their goals. However, one must want to accomplish their goal onward actually receiving satisfaction from it.




Rachels then goes on to explain the diversion between selfishness and self-centeredness. Selfish behavior is one that ignores the interests of others, while self-interest is when you do things for yourself such as going to the doctors when you are not feeling well. However, to determine if an action is right depends on the circumstance for each person. Next, Rachels shows the counterarguments against ethical egoism and its inability to be generalized. The argument against begins by saying that it is not in ones own interest to tell others that they are acting from self-interest. An egoist then cant believe that ethical egoism can be generally adopted because that action would not be in his own self-interest.
