An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge: Life in the twinkle of an Eye
If you found yourself or so to be executed, how would you respond? Would you beg for your disembodied spirit? Would you resist defiantly until the very end? In Ambrose Bierces short story, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, Peyton Farquhar is a man standing in the face of his own mortality, about to be hung from the very tie he attempted to destroy. Bierce reinforces the solemn nature of the proceeding as the infantry company is illustrated as staring stonily, motionless (23) and describes the sentries standing so still that they might have been statues to adorn the bridge.
