If the democratic perfections of social justice, nice representation, and equality of opportunity were to survive in the new, industrialized America, the organisation would have to assume more responsibility for the poor, the downtrodden, and the vulnerable. For many, this responsibility seemed to tarry in the hands of the privileged elite as good as the government. Itself an undemocratic concept, this idea nonetheless was rooted in a sense of altruism and duty. Eleanor Roosevelt once summed up this conception with this statement: "In that [wealthy] society you were kind to the poor, you did not put down your philanthropic duties, you assisted the hospitals and did something for the needy" (PBS.org 2). Indeed, women such as Eleanor Roosevelt became implemental to the Progressive movement and educated female reformers barred from some professional careers turned their attention to social causes by charge of associations.
