Paul describes this life consisting of, Shells, gas clouds, and flotillas of tanks shattering, corroding, death. Dysentery, influenza, typhus fever scalding, choking death. These young men began to question the designing for their deaths and are forced to hold their emotions in order to stop mentally stable, but stock-still they eventually lose hope. An whole generation on twain sides of the war is lost this way, as they develop their sense of personal identity after being unembellished of their innocence and humanity.
