Alma Umihanic 21.10.2010 PROLOGUE Anne Bradstreet Anne Bradstreet was an English-American writer, the first cleaning lady to be published in colonial America. Her work was very influential to prudes in her era. Bradstreets knowledge gave her advantages to write with authority about politics, history, medicine and theology. Her verse line is ground on observation of the world around her, focusing to a great extent on domestic and religious themes. She is saying that everyone is verbalise her that she shouldnt be doing something that is considered unfeminine such as writing poetry. They are telling her that she should be sewing or cooking. And if she does do intimately with her poetry it wont matter because she is a woman. They will say she steal it from a man or it was just by chance. The poetry portrays the struggles of being a woman in a Puritan baseball club. She realized that in Puritan society, women were not meant to speak their reason and have their whims.

With this poem she acknowledges her role as a woman in society even if she doesnt agree with it. Anne Bradstreet shows her actualization of mens supposed superiority in that time stream with this line: Men can do best, and women know it well (40). Regardless of her acknowledgment of her role in society, she uses her poetry to mystify her feelings and opinions about it through honesty and humor. Anne Bradstreet lived in a time where women were meant to keep quite and tend to the children and home. She wrote The Prologue during this time to express her opinion on a womans voice in society.
